The Super Auction 3 set for February 27, 2010

Ann Arbor, MI – Building on the success of the 2009 Super Auctions, the first Super Auction of 2010 will be held on February 27, 2010 at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds, 5055 Ann Arbor-Saline Road, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ten auction companies and over 15 auctioneers from Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Missouri will gather together for an exposition of American Auctioneering. The event starts promptly at 10:00 AM EST and there will be three auction rings running for the entire auction. The auction will last approximately five hours with over 1400 lots up for bid.

Collections from across the Midwest and South are again scheduled to cross the block. Selections of antiques, lighting, sport cards, farm toys, stamps, pottery, glass, coins, collectibles, and firearms will be available. ZANESVILLE, Ohio - Collectors can express their devotion to art pottery by participating in Belhorn Auction Services' 15th annual Summer American Art Pottery Auction Sunday, July 12. Held in conjunction with the annual Pottery Lovers' Reunion, July 11-18, the auction will feature more than 400 pieces of art pottery. Also during the weeklong festival, Belhorn will present a second art pottery auction of more than 500 lots on July 15. LiveAuctioneers.com will provide Internet live bidding for both sales.

"Both auctions will have American art pottery of equal value. There will be an emphasis on pottery made in the Zanesville area like Roseville and Weller, but there will also be Rookwood, Van Briggle and others made elsewhere," said auctioneer Greg Belhorn.

Sunday's auction will begin at 1 p.m. Eastern at the Muskingum County Welcome Center, 205 N. Fifth St., in Zanesville.

Featured Roseville items will include a 1920s Panel 296-10" vase in dark green, a Windsor 551-7" vase in blue with green ferns, and an early Velmoss jardinière and pedestal in flowing matte green and brown glaze. The vases are estimated from $400-$600, while the jar and pedestal set is estimated at $1,500-$1,600.

An 11 1/4-inch Weller matte green vase has a $500-$700 estimate, while a scarce Muncie Rombic star vase in high gloss yellow has a $150-$200 estimate.

Sunday's auction will conclude with more than 65 pieces of Hull pottery.

Wednesday's auction will begin at 1 p.m. at the Ramada Inn, 4645 E. Pike in Zanesville.

Included in the sale will be a Roseville Futura 404-8" Balloons Glove vase (est. $500-$700), a Weller Dickens Ware mug decorated with an Indian chief (est. $500-$700) and a Roseville Falline 655-15" vase (est. $700-$900).

Auctioneers from The Super Auction to conduct Annual AAPA Auction

The American Art Pottery Association’s 29th annual convention will return to Philadelphia on April 22 – 26, 2009. The event’s success last year prompted a repeat visit, and 2009 will feature entirely new tours, seminars, and educational exhibits, many of which highlight the Arts and Crafts movement and its pottery. The convention will again be headquartered at the Sheraton Bucks County Hotel in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, located near I-95 and Route 1.

The convention will include an art pottery auction, two-day pottery show and sale, and author’s book signing event. The auction, featuring several hundred lots of vintage and contemporary art pottery, will be held Friday, April 24th at 5:00 PM at the Radisson Hotel Philadelphia Northeast located at 2400 Old Lincoln Highway, Trevose, Pennsylvania. The auction will be conducted by Greg Belhorn and Peter Gehres of Belhorn Auction Services, LLC, of Columbus, Ohio. The auction preview, reception, and book signing event will begin at 3:30 PM. Greg Belhorn is also Secretary of the AAPA.

The convention will feature a keynote presentation at the annual reception and banquet on the evening of April 22nd will be given by Dr. Martin Eidelberg, Professor Emeritus of Art History at Rutgers University and noted author on American ceramics and glass. His topic will be “Arts and Crafts Pottery: What’s In A Name?”

The three seminars feature an impressive roster of speakers.

Suzanne Perrault, tile expert, author, Craftsman Auctions partner, and Antiques Roadshow appraiser, will lead a seminar on collecting, discussing why it doesn't have to be big, expensive, or a superstar to be worthy of collecting. Unusual and noteworthy objects can come in unassuming packages.

Prominent contemporary potters Paul Katrich (Katrich Studios), Scott Draves (Door Pottery), Eric Olsen (Common Ground Pottery), and Chris Powell (Chris Powell Pottery) will share insights about their work and the future of art pottery.

Jonathan Clancy, Ph.D., lecturer in American Fine & Decorative Art at Sotheby’s Institute of Art and co-author with Dr. Eidelberg of Beauty in Common Things, American Arts and Crafts Pottery from the Two Red Roses Foundation will give an overview of the Foundation’s collection, its significant pieces, and research discoveries.

The country’s greatest two-day pottery show and sale, featuring fifty pottery dealers from throughout America, will be held at the headquarters hotel on Saturday, April 25th and Sunday, April 26th. The sale will feature American and European art pottery, along with contemporary pottery. The special exhibit accompanying the show will be American Arts & Crafts pottery from the Two Red Roses Foundation collection. The event opens to convention registered members for a private viewing and sale on Saturday from 11:00 AM – 12 Noon. The show and sale will be open to the general public from Noon – 5:00 PM Saturday, and from 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM Sunday. Admission is $6.00 per person for non-convention registered members and the general public. Activities scheduled as part of the show include hourly prizes and “Booth Chats” on both days, plus a pottery ID table on Sunday.

The 2009 convention will feature two tours. The Wednesday, April 22nd event will be a special behind-the-scenes tour of Craftsman Farms, where the 1911 New Jersey home of turn-of-the-20th century designer Gustav Stickley, now a National Historic Landmark, has become a museum dedicated to the American Arts and Crafts movement.

The Thursday, April 23rd bus tour will include a private viewing of the Gordon collection of Rookwood pottery at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. After lunch at the museum, attendees will have free time to explore the museum, featuring separate special exhibits on Cezanne, Matisse, and 20th century Japanese crafts, or walk to nearby Fairmount Park and enjoy landmarks such as the Fairmount Waterworks and Boathouse Row.

Two auctioneers from The Super Auction are teaching this week at The Ohio Auction School. Greg Belhorn is teaching a session on Auctions in the 21st Century and a session on specialty and catalog auctions. Peter Gehres is teaching sessions on auction ethics, bid calling and the auction opening. Both Gehres and Belhorn are graduates of The Ohio Auction School. The Ohio Auction School offers two weeks (over 80 hours) of instruction on the auctioneering, all aspects of the auction business and bid calling. The course fulfills the auction school requirements for a number of states including Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, and Florida among others. Michigan does not currently require attending auction school to become an auctioneer however auction school is a great way, required or not, to establish one’s self in the auction business and learn the auction method of marketing.

SOLD at The Super Auction: Roseville Cherry Blossom

This is the first post in a series on prices realized from The Super Auction held on Febuary 28, 2009 at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

This Roseville Cherry Blossom vase was the fourth item sold in the Belhorn Auction Service’s pottery session. After considerable bidding activity the piece sold for $575.

“The piece was a great example of Cherry Blossom line with good color and mold,” stated auctioneer Greg Belhorn. “Our pre-auction estimate was $400-$500 on this mint piece and I think it was well worth the money spent given the quality of this piece.”

Belhorn continued, “We had a number of Roseville pieces in the first Super Auction and after the feedback from both our seller and the buyers in attendance we will be offering more pieces of this iconic art pottery at the next Super Auction. Mid-Century Basket Purse being sold at The Super Auction

A unique and sought after oval Nantucket basket purse by S.P. Boyer will be sold by Belhorn Auction Services, LLC (BAS) at the upcoming Super Auction on February 28, 2009 at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The purse was made circa 1950 and is in excellent condition and has a carved sperm whale on what appears to be a mahogany plate. There are two hinges on the back and a clasp with holding pin on the front. The handle is bent wood.

The basket purse is marked with the Boyer cross stamp and the original label reading, "I was made on Nantucket Island / I am strong and stout / Don't lose me or burn me / I'll never wear out" and "Made by S.P. Boyer." Excellent condition although the owner's initials (LBS) have been engraved on the interior mahogany plaque. Basket is approximately 8" tall by 9 1/2" wide. With handle, the piece measures 12 3/4" tall.

"This is a very interesting item and while we have sold many purses in the past one of this make and quality has never crossed our block," commented Greg Belhorn of BAS. "It should be interesting to see what this item brings at auction due to it highly collectible and the growing interest in mid-century items."

American Art Pottery Session Catalog ready to view

The catalog for the upcoming American Art Pottery Session of The Super Auction is now ready to be viewed. The first Super Auction is February 28, 2009 at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds, Ann Arbor, Michigan. American Art Pottery to be sold at The Super Auction

One hundred lots of American Art Pottery are scheduled to cross the auction block on February 28, 2009 as part of the inaugural Super Auction. Included will be examples of Roseville, Rookwood, Weller, Fulper and others. The lots come from collectors and dealers from the Midwest and South.

Greg Belhorn of Belhorn Auction Services, LLC is conducting the pottery session. Belhorn is the secretary of the American Art Pottery Association and the official auctioneer for their year annual convention as well as the auctioneer for the Pottery Lovers Reunion held each July in Zanesville, Ohio.

“The Super Auction will showcase the service we offer to both buyers and sellers,” Belhorn said recently. “For sellers we offer full color cataloging of all lots, full insurance and careful handling and prompt settlement.
